How to Play Co-op Splatoon Raiders

Co-op is optional—and powerful

Splatoon Raiders is built as a single-player-focused adventure, but you can bring friends once the early campaign opens multiplayer. Up to four players can raid together through online play or local wireless. There is no split-screen: every Mechanic needs their own Nintendo Switch 2 and game copy. Online features also require a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership.

This guide explains the unlock gate, how to use the Hideout Ship dock radio, private passwords versus keywords, local wireless quirks, Call for Help, and how difficulty and loot behave in a group. If you still need campaign context, finish Getting Started and the early Walkthrough chapters first.

How to unlock co-op

Progress the story through the early dungeon around Tumetto Rocks on Puos Island. After you clear that beat and return to the Hideout Ship, a radio / communication machine appears at the dock. That machine is the multiplayer hub—if it is missing, you have not finished the unlock dungeon yet.

Friends who want to join you generally need the same unlock. If someone still lacks the dock radio, they cannot create or join rooms reliably. Rush the Tumetto Rocks / Puos Island objective together in solo story mode before scheduling a four-player night.

Online rooms: private friends vs keyword matchmaking

At the dock radio, choose online multiplayer, then create or join a room:

  • Password / passcode rooms — Best for friends. Share the exact code; case and spacing matter.
  • Keyword rooms — Useful for community groups or open lobbies. Pick a unique keyword so random players do not collide with your session.
  • Host start — The room leader confirms when the party is ready and starts the raid. Agree beforehand who hosts, because host-side actions (starting the run, certain Bot prompts) stay centralized.

Before you launch, align on:

  1. Target dungeon or dens route.
  2. Difficulty (Tourist / Raider / Survivalist).
  3. Who brings which tank archetype so roles do not all stack identical Power kits.
  4. Whether anyone still needs Spirhalite or Bond farming rather than pure story progress.

For loadout planning, skim Builds, Tier List, and How to Use Gadgets. For button prompts in a noisy party, keep Controls handy.

Local wireless co-op

Local wireless lives in the same multiplayer menu but does not require Nintendo Switch Online. Players must be near each other; you will only see rooms in range. Create or join exactly as you would online, then depart from the ship into the chosen raid.

Local play is ideal for couch-adjacent sessions without internet, but the same no-split-screen rule applies. Treat it like a LAN raid night: confirm everyone patched the game, finished the unlock dungeon, and selected the same difficulty expectations.

Call for Help when friends are offline

Solo Mechanics can still request temporary online backup through Call for Help. Use it when a dungeon spike outpaces your kit. Helpers who answer can earn help rewards such as materials or parts. After a successful call, expect a cooldown—you cannot spam infinite backups.

You can also answer other players’ help requests from the map/hub prompts for bonus payouts. Call for Help complements full co-op; it does not replace a planned four-player clear of a long dungeon.

How group raids change the feel (without rewriting loot rules)

Enemy pressure rises when more Mechanics enter a space, and Nintendo’s design accounts for mixed power levels so lower-level friends are not instantly deleted. Still, coordinate ink coverage: Speed tanks peel and revive positioning, Power tanks break shields and Boss armor, Tactical tanks plant Shot Pots and Bombloon chains.

Importantly, the global difficulty rule still holds: Tourist / Raider / Survivalist change enemy strength, not loot quality. If the squad is struggling, drop difficulty on the ship before relaunching rather than abandoning a farm. See the Difficulty Guide.

Rewards are individual—players keep what they earn rather than fighting over a shared pile. That makes co-op excellent for parallel Spirhalite goals. Sync farm targets with How to Farm Spirhalite and mark materials on the Raid Checklist.

Deep Cut, Bot Buddy, and party etiquette

Only coordinate Showstopper timing if your group uses voice chat; overlapping every special at once can waste control windows. Rotate Bot Buddies across sessions if members still need Bond ranks—finishing dungeons with a buddy is what raises Bond. Details: How to Increase Bot Buddy Bond.

Weapon upgrades remain personal at Frye’s Weapon Stash after you return. Co-op helps you survive longer routes; it does not auto-upgrade everyone’s stash. Spend shards intentionally using How to Upgrade Weapons and identify drops via Items and Weapons.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • No radio at the dock — Finish Tumetto Rocks / Puos Island early dungeon progress.
  • Friend cannot join — Confirm they unlocked multiplayer and typed the password/keyword exactly.
  • Room empty on local wireless — Move systems closer; local discovery is range-limited.
  • Online errors — Verify Switch Online status, system time, and that everyone is on compatible game versions.
  • Raid feels impossible — Lower difficulty (loot unchanged), diversify tanks, or Call for Help once.

Co-op shines when the party treats the Hideout Ship as a shared planning table: pick a goal, pick a difficulty, pick complementary kits, then ink together. When you want a broader systems refresher afterward, return to the Guides Hub or read the Review for how multiplayer fits the overall experience.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

When does co-op unlock in Splatoon Raiders?

After you clear the early dungeon around Tumetto Rocks on Puos Island and return to the Hideout Ship, where the dock radio appears.

Is there split-screen co-op?

No. Online and local wireless support up to four players, but each person needs their own Nintendo Switch 2 and copy of the game.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online for local wireless?

Local wireless does not require Switch Online. Online co-op and Call for Help features do.

Does co-op change loot drops?

Difficulty still only affects enemy strength, not loot tables. Players receive individual rewards from the raid rather than competing for one shared pool.

What is Call for Help?

A solo option to request temporary online backup for a tough raid, with a cooldown after use. Helpers can earn bonus rewards for answering.
